Marvel at masterpieces of ancient Armenian stonemasonry at Noravank Monastery, an architectural ensemble set in the Amaghu River Gorge. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, this stone complex boasts the 14th-century double-decker Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God), as well as Surb Karapet (St. John The Baptist), built in 1216-1227 while Latin crusaders held Constantinople. Both churches feature characteristic bell tower drums and conical roofs. Explore the complex further to discover a number of intriguing khachkars and important cave complexes. • Getting here with public (Maršrutka) transport from Yerevan can be quite a struggle, however this is one of the most magic places I have seen on earth: I wish you found some ladies,as I did, singing hymns in the upper church since you will hear their praising voices in the lower chapels too! Absolutely beautiful and peaceful highlight in Armenia!!
  • A super quiet and isolated monastery. As per the guide, the monks wanted to live a secluded life for which they created this monastery away from civilization. Very calm and quite place, during summer there might be a lot of chances for trekking and rock climbing. Worth a visit as it falls on the way to Tatev.
