Fortress Hohensalzburg, Salzburg

4.4
#1 of 102 in Museums in Austrian Alps
Perched atop a hill overlooking Salzburg, Fortress Hohensalzburg bears witness to more than 900 years of Austrian history, demonstrating the supreme power of the archbishops. Construction of this massive fortress began in the 11th century at the request of Archbishop Gebhard I of Helffenstein. The project continued over the centuries, finishing in 1501. Visit the regency rooms, torture chamber, illuminated lower church, and the fortress museum. At an altitude of 506 m (1,660 ft), the watchtower provides views of Salzburg. Purchase the Fortress Card to take advantage of the funicular ride up the steep hill, and delve deeper into the fortress' history with an audio guide. We take the funicular (not super well organized) and arriving in the fortress. The ticket covers both. Great view of the city on one side and the mountain on the other. Go in the morning for the best photos of the city.

This is a great old fortress, where history lives again. Unfortunately, not much was available of the historical furniture. That was already lacking to complete.

Castle Hohensalzburg dominates over the whole city. Wherever you go you can see it. So it is a "natural" choice .... to go there and see it for yourself. You can get there either on foot or by funicular (this proves to be a good option for those who are in wheelchair). The view is fantastic. There is also a restaurant where you can eat or just have a coffee or beer. You can visit the Marionette Museum as well as the Museum of the Rainer Regiment. Furthermore, the castle also serves as the venue for different events such as the famous Salzburg Fortress Concert.

Definitely, the best ancient European Castle/museum I've seen to date. The buildings and grounds are well kept, and the completeness/variety of the museum and guided audio tour were very good. The cost seemed reasonable, and I like that you can take the tram, or access the castle via the original foot path. On top of all that, the views of surrounding Salzburg, the Alps and Austria can't be beat within 100km.

Cool piece of history with a great view looking down on the old City. The museum exhibits are not all equally impressive, but I found plenty to interest me. You can either take the fancy funicular up and down, or walk the long way (we accidentally walked up, and then took the quick ride down once we had seen everything).

The fortress at the top of a hill...literally. And a must-see if you're visiting Salzburg. A col, unique mini train takes you up to the top. From there, you can choose either the audio or non-audio tour. I suggest the audio "premium" tour since you get to see more of the fortress. You pretty much get to explore every part. It may feel a little pricey for the ticket, but when you get to the very top of the fortress and experience that view you'll feel quite differently. They also have a restaurant in the fortress with outside seating where you can see the entire city.

Am amazing experience!! Visited here with my fiancée! the fortress looks very imposing and impressive purchased 2 basic tickets (12.5 EUR each) and got the rail lift up to the fortress (you can take the stairs but you'd be exhausted when you get to the top). a great experience inside, lots of interesting historical stuff and fantastic views too, there is also a restaurant and toilets up there too. Well worth it!!

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
