Mirabell Palace, Salzburg

4.5
#1 of 182 in Parks in Austrian Alps
Built as a token of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich's love for his mistress, Mirabell Palace is perhaps best known as the backdrop of "The Sound of Music." The former palace was built in 1606 and now houses the offices of the mayor and municipal council. The boxwood gardens contain mythology-themed statues from 1730, as well as four groups of sculptures representing the four elements. If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," don't miss the horse fountain, where the von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi." A stroll through the gardens will jog many memories from the film. • Impressive open space with lawns, flower beds, many sculptures and fountains. Many interesting buildings surround the gardens. Many benches for seating in the shade on a sunny day. There is an ice cream stall and small cafe. WC near entrance level ground through out mainly laid to gravel path.
  • Beautifully maintained gardens. Much bigger than it initially looks, with myriad passages and a lot of entry ways. Summer sees the garden in full bloom and green in all its glory. Fans of The Sound of Music must not miss an opportunity to visit this place as a lot of scenes from the movie were shot here. Of course to remember the scenes, do watch the movie before visiting!
  • A nice place to rest a bit or simply enjoy architecture. A lot of people there and not so big so it may disturb. But it's worth seeing for tourists.
  • Passed through the gardens on the way to the older parts of the city. Nice but the best part was the statues. Laid out nice and a leisurely stroll.
  • Beautiful gardens, very peaceful in the morning. Great area to pass by as you make your way up to the castle.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
