Mirabell Palace, Salzburg

#1 of 444 in Parks in Austrian Alps
Built as a token of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich's love for his mistress, Mirabell Palace is perhaps best known as the backdrop of "The Sound of Music." The former palace was built in 1606 and now houses the offices of the mayor and municipal council. The boxwood gardens contain mythology-themed statues from 1730, as well as four groups of sculptures representing the four elements. If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," don't miss the horse fountain, where the von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi." A stroll through the gardens will jog many memories from the film. • Unfortunately, the weather was not very good. I would love to see the beautiful facility in spring with all the flowers. However, it still seemed very well maintained and invites you to linger. You can also visit concerts there, unfortunately we didn't have enough time.

  • It is very beautiful garden plenty of flowers, nice clean place. It was raining the last time we went there so it is very cold and windy. Plenty of space to walk, nice place to relax.  more »

  • Beautiful and tranquil garden. Definitely worth taking a few minutes to sit and relax during hectic travelling. Lovely gardens, fountains, dwarf statues and, of course, the Sound of Music steps so you can re-enact 'do-ray-me'. A lovely hour spent.
  • We expected a bit more to see, but walked through it all fairly quick. The gardens are beautiful, and seem well maintained, as well as the inside plants. Definitely worth to walk through it to take in the scenery, but don't expect too much more.
