Mozarts Geburtshaus, Salzburg

3.3
#3 of 102 in Museums in Austrian Alps
Learn about the details of Mozart's childhood and his relationship with his family at Mozarts Geburtshaus. Exhibited instruments, documents, portraits, and family letters reveal his passionate interest in music--opera in particular. Start from the birth room on the third floor, where Mozart came into the world on January 27, 1756. Do not miss such rarities as his childhood violin or the clavichord upon which he composed "The Magic Flute." See the striking unfinished portrait of the composer that his brother-in-law painted two years before Mozart's death. Breathe in the atmosphere of the age on the first floor among original furniture from that time. This was a reproduction, however the history, musical instruments and the overall feel was very real. Our guide was able to build on our peaked interest on this genius.  more »

Like many houses of famous people, there is not much to it. There is a great deal of info but nothing you couldn't find on the web. There are some original paintings but no great art. If you really love Mozart, go to one of the many concerts in Salzburg featuring his music.

It's only significant because of its history, otherwise very modest and unassuming. The building's front facade is a positive, then downhill from then on. Most personal effects are copies, reproduction or merely from same period or 'good guesses'. Totally misses the mark of being an awe-inspiring experience that it deserves. Disappointing.

Lots of reading to do , nothing special really. Not much set for the place of Mozarts birth , was not even a bed. Totally missed the sign saying this was the birthroom as it looked like all the others. His residence on the other side of the river was much better with an audio guide and music excerpts. Better to do the residence as the birthplace is a bit naff and not worth the money.

It's interesting and worth the visit to see the personal effects of the man and his immediate family. I especially enjoyed the letters, music sheets and seeing two of his pianos. The self guided tour app is convenient. Three stars because its historically significant and well put together, but it is modest, a bit expensive (€12), and small/short.

An insightful experience! With 3 floors to experience, there is a fair bit to see. You get the story of Mozart's life through to death and lots of information about his family and friends. There is a lot of artifacts some original some replicas. The price to get in and have a look around is 11EUR. I don't recommend more than an hour here.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
