Museum der Moderne Monchsberg, Salzburg

2.5
#12 of 26 in Museums in Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg is picturesquely situated high above the rooftops of the old town of Salzburg and offers new, contemporary architecture for large-scale exhibitions and presentations of the museum's own holdings an international context. The museum offers an ideal setting for presentations of the museum’s own comprehensive collection and large-scale temporary exhibitions of international contemporary art.

The Museum der Moderne Rupertinum, a baroque town palace built by the archbishops, located in the immediate vicinity of Festival Hall and Cathedral precinct, has been adapted for the presentation of modern art. The two buildings of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg offer 3.000 m2 of exhibition space for thematic and monographic exhibitions of 20th and 21st centry art, as well as presentations of graphics and photography.

  • You can access the restaurant/cafe without paying an entrance fee. The views across the City are excellent both from inside or out on the terrace in summer. We had a coffee and a cake for a reasonable...  more »
  • All right, you was there on the bottom and paid to take the elevator-and now? left Museum? I didn't, maybe it's good, but I confess I'm not too fond of modern art-I love ancient artifacts, archeological and historic but modern art know no-well, at the top, there are two interesting things besides the Museum, an outdoor area that yields photos incredible Salzburg and also the restaurant-the restaurant seems very good, but the average ticket would be very high for me (at least 30 EUR per person) so I enjoyed just vista-with the Salzburg card is included.

  • Located in the Mönchsberg Mountain. The Museum opened its doors in 2004 and primarily works of the 20th and 21st century are exposed. The building itself is a work of art. The exterior walls are covered with marble of a mountain close to Salzburg. Its large windows offer sweeping views of the city. The structure incorporates a historical 19th century water tower.

  • Nice building with attractive city overview. Exibitions are also ok.
  • Decent but not that big... Worth a trip for the view and the multimedia exhibitions
  • So boring. I saw some people that was excited just from a white picture with a few lines. And they saw there a realy deep meaning. But I dont see there anything and i wouldnt call that a modern museum..
  • Interesting place with interesting exhibitions. Nice view from the top.
  • Didn't blow my mind but worth it if you like art and have the Salzburg card.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
