Petersfriedhof, Salzburg

4.6
Visit the catacombs embedded in the rock of the Festungsberg at Petersfriedhof, the oldest cemetery in the city. The oldest tombstone dates to 1288, but the catacombs most likely originate from the early Christian days. Walk through narrow passages, which probably served as hermitages and a burial site. Climb the staircase up to the two chapels. Enter the Maximus cave, the highest prayer room of the catacombs. Notice an arched grave that supposedly served as a stone bed. Between the two chapels, you can stand on a viewing platform with a small wooden bell tower. Many of the aristocratic families and notable people of Salzburg are buried here, including Mozart's sister, Nannerl, and Haydn's younger brother, Michael. Petersfriedhof is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Salzburg Edition.

  • Beautiful little cemetery with lots of small graves. A lot of the headstones have interesting designs. You can hear the found of a falling water in the distance. A nice little tranquil place.
  • this was quite the resort and i saw several dead bodies in the catacombs but other than that this place was lit as heck
  • So quite and peacefull. Wortwhile visiting and enjoying a moment of reflection.
  • One of the best spot ever. Lovely cemetery. Great view around
  • Beautiful cemetery. The catacombs carved in the side of the cliffs are a neat little excursion that are less crowded than the main attractions in the city. You can get in with your Salzburg Card. It is very quick to do ~15 minutes.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
