Salzburg Cathedral (Dom), Salzburg

The site of religious worship for centuries, Salzburg Cathedral (Dom) still contains the same baptismal font in which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized. The Baroque cathedral as it stands today was rebuilt in the 17th century, but a church had existed in this same spot since 774. Inside, visit the cathedral museum to see religious treasures, such as the Cross of St. Rupert and the Sacred Dove. Continue to the Cabinet of Curiosities for an exhibit of natural objects and artwork. This exhibit connects to the Long Gallery of St. Peter's Abbey, a 70 m (230 ft) corridor lined with paintings. • Fled the rain outside we end up in a totally different world. What a great beautiful baroque Cathedral. You get almost a stiff neck it up looking at all the beautiful ceiling paintings that are still very well preserved. The crypt is also impressive.

  • The cathedral is lovely with some great architecture and brilliant ceilings. It was quite dark though. Interesting to see the font where Mozart was baptised.  more »

  • A must place to visit! In some evenings you can participate to the Catholic religious ceremony, where the organ music is played. Really amazing sound!
  • Very good example of your typical, large European Cathedral. Not so money-grabbing as some, you are able to visit and take your time, without turnstiles and cash. Excellent crypt also. Good place to cool down and relax on a hot day.
  • Very beautiful cathedral. Totally different from all the cathedral I have seen .
  • Beautiful building, the dome was damaged in WW2 but they restored it perfectly. The inside is decorated with lots of paintings and the ceiling is magnificent! You can also enter the cript. Entrance is free, but a donation is appreciated (and then you also get a small information brochure).
  • It is very beautiful. The interiors are full of carvings and statues on the domes are breathtaking. Must visit. Got a chance to hear a choir practcing and the experience was more than complete!

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
