  • The museum itself had a large number, and varying range of exhibits. Being a musician, I particularly enjoyed the instrument exhibition. However there were some points that took away from this visit. ...  more »
  • Apart from a temporary dedicated to beautiful drawings from the Louvre (Michelamgelo, Raphael, Caravaggio ..), notable the music Museum; ad hoc movies show and feel authentic Baroque instruments through headphones or into disuse, such as the waterspout, the fortepiano or a series of flutes. Everything arranged perfectly. Worth a trip.

  • This museum didn't disappoint, great contemporary displays of historical art and objects. The local Salzburg landscape paintings are just beautiful. Interior room ceilings also have amazing decoration...  more »

  • Excellent place to learn a little history of Salzburg with some fun activities for kids. Brilliant use of space and displays. Most narration in German but you could supposedly get an audio guide for your own leisure learning. Funnily we were not told where we could get them. Guy selling tickets by the counter look less than enthusiastic about his role other than making sure everyone deposits their bags before entering. Café within the museum really is a self service coffee maker which you'll need to pay by coins for an espresso or coffee. No food available so be prepared.
  • Lots to see. Gives a nice comprehensive history of Salzburg and not just it's most famous son like the other museums! Take an audio guide for a more engaging tour. Entry is included with the Salzburg card.
  • Criative presentation of information, some interactive things, cared and beautiful objects. I missed a little more of the pre-austrian period.
  • Mostly Mozart and classic instruments. Mozart was born here. Classical music folks will enjoy it more than some others, I believe.
  • For in-depth understanding of Salzburg’s history this is a must visit. Also, the glockenspiel tower with its 30+ bells appeals to most. They have some amazing artefacts from Roman times and cover all periods of history to modern times. Particularly the very eventful last 400 years.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
