Stift Nonnberg, Salzburg

4.4
Made famous thanks to the movie "The Sound of Music," Stift Nonnberg is both one of the area's oldest religious buildings and a symbol of the city. Visit the convent, founded in 714, and explore the grounds to see the living quarters and daily surroundings of the nuns who called it home. Within, you'll discover crypts, medieval frescoes, religious decorations, and a mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic. If you're a fan of the famous film, keep in mind that the woman known as Maria von Trapp once lived here, and her life later inspired the movie. As the complex sits above much of the rest of the city on a low hill, peeking out the windows can afford you a sweeping view over the rooftops and across to the forested hills beyond. • We did this on a Sound of Music bicycle tour. It would be a tough walk to it..If you like the movie, you need to see it.  more »
  • As a fan of The Sound of Music, I had to make the hike up to find the famed abbey of Maria von Trapp. The area you can visit is small because it is an active convent, but you are allowed to go inside ...  more »
  • It is quite a hike from the Old City. However, once you reach the convent you will be glad you made the journey. The view is amazing and it is so quiet, peaceful. The convent is a little small compare...  more »

  • In its own right, it’s a beautiful abbey. Away from the traffic, it’s quiet and peaceful. I go inside and there’s a choir singing. This abbey was used for the external scenes of Maria’s abbey on the Sound of Music. There are no rolling green hills anywhere nearby for Maria to be beckoned from – a bit of Hollywood magic, that is – but I can imagine her coming through these gates.
  • It's okay, just a quiet church. But I should say that I was the only one here when I visited, and the life of the place presumably comes with its use.
  • Amazing place, the oldest catholic monastry for women in the world. If you go there you can put a coin into the box on the lefthand wall when you enter the Church and you will be surprised. Usually the place is not crowded at all. you would be very lucky if you hear the nuns prayer while you are there.
  • You won't spend too much time here, but worth a look nonetheless. It is very quiet and has a special ambiance.
  • So peaceful. Few tourists.

Where to stay in Salzburg

There’s no better area to stay in the city where Mozart was born than the historical city center, a World Heritage Site. Salzburg's hub offers comfortable accommodations nestled between a rich array of sights. The Salzach River cuts directly through town, dividing the city into east and west. Look for accommodations in the Altstadt, tucked in between the river and the city’s mountain, Monchsberg. For budget-minded travelers, try a centrally located youth hostel or small hotel. If price isn’t an issue, splurge on Austrian luxury in an upscale hotel.
