Church of the Jesuits, Vienna

4.8
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Architectural Building
At Church of the Jesuits, admire one of the masterpieces of Baroque illusionistic painting. Built between 1623 and 1627 as a university chapel, the church was remodeled some 80 years later by the Italian Jesuit Brother and artist Andrea Pozzo, whose grave remains inside the crypt. A rather austere exterior stands in contrast with the lavish interior richly decorated with gilding, woodcarvings, allegorical ceiling frescoes, and imitations of marble columns. Pay special attention to the trompe l'oeil fresco on the flat ceiling, which remarkably creates an illusion of a dome. A Sunday mass with a choir and orchestra is worth a second visit. • It is an impressive architecture and paintings. All the Jesuits churches are so. You enter and you will be impressed by the atmosphere, in fact that's what all the architects are looking for...  more »

  • From the outside you will have no idea of what awaits you inside the church. With a large organ (which was playing when I visited) and massive marble columns everywhere, the church is one of the most beautiful I have seen in my life. It is also not well known by tourists as it was empty while other churches were full. Definitely worth a visit.
  • This is a beautiful church not only by design but also by its authentic spirituality. Give your self some time to sit quietly while admiring its works of art. You will find peace and solace. Also a prayer of gratitude for stunning beauty that stands out even in this amazing city.
