L'Anse aux Meadows

3.9
Offering access to the remains of an 11th-century Viking settlement, L'Anse aux Meadows tourism draws history buffs from afar. This world-renowned archaeological site sits on a rugged coastline at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula surrounded by cliffs and peat bogs. The excavated remains of seven timber-framed turf buildings similar in style to those found in Norse Greenland and Iceland were listed as a World Heritage Site in 1978. North of the archeological site, you'll find a reconstructed sod longhouse as part of an interpretive display, while if you head southwest you'll come across the remains of an indigenous hunting camp. The visitor center showcases original artifacts found at the site, such as a stone oil lamp, birch bark case, clay pit furnace, and 50 or so forged iron objects.
