Escalier du Roi d'Aragon (King Aragon Steps), Bonifacio

4.4
According to legend, Escalier du Roi d'Aragon (King Aragon Steps) was carved from the steep cliff in a single night during Alfonso V's siege of the town in 1420. In fact, it was constructed earlier by an older Franciscan monk, who devised an easy access to the water source and the cave at the base of their monastery. The staircase leads to the sea, offering you a unique opportunity to swim at the foot of the cliffs. By boat, you can see the stairway all the way up the side of a cliff that looks like a hollow tube in the stone. You can walk the entire 187 steps, inclined at an angle of 45 degrees, overlooking the sea. • We read about this staircase before our visit to learn about the history and how it had been used in the past. A truly special place! The steps take your breath away both because of the stairs...  more »

  • Quite high 180 steps to climb. 2,50 euro entrance. Nice view indeed. Don’t do this in hot summer if you’re not in normal shape or have bad knees
  • It is a steep staircase that leads to a path that stops short of the cavs. The myth that this was dug in a day seems to lack credibility on any level. The fresh water well is now off limits. Not for the faint hearted. The rock formations are interesting and it makes the list of doing it to say you have but apart from that Bonifacio has better offerings.
