Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne, Carcassonne Center

4.5
Home to the Inquisition Tower, Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne served as a headquarters for the Catholic Inquisition. It is one of the best examples of medieval fortified architecture in Europe. Here, you'll find the Musée de la Torture, which documents some of the original torture equipment used in the Inquisition. The outer fortifications of the castle and ramparts include two concentric walls with towers and barbicans to resist attacks by large siege engines. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, complete with a drawbridge and ditch leading to the central keep. • Our guide was easy to understand and very informative on the history and life of the city. She dispelled rumors or incorrect ideas. She tailored all to our age group. I loved walking the medieval streets . Would have liked to walked above the castle but age and mobility prevented that. It was an enjoyable day stepping back in history.
  • If you are a fan of medieval castles, I highly recommend a visit! I love how many of the details and material are preserved and there is a village within that is alive! Just that it’s mostly souvenirs shops and restaurants now but still interesting nonetheless. We walked around admiring the structures and views for a good 3 hours. Plenty of parking here so there is nothing to worry about if you are coming by car.
