Trip Planner: Europe / France / Centre-Val de Loire / Indre-et-Loire / Chenonceaux / Chateau de Chenonceau
Protected and loved by prominent women in Renaissance history, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médici, Chateau de Chenonceau, is the second most visited château in France, other than the Royal Palace of Versailles. French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme designed the castle and built it on the site of an old mill on the River Cher in the 11th century. The château later saw renovations during the 16th century due to its destruction in the 15th century.
All of its gardens and grounds are open for you to explore, including the castle's architectural mixture of late Gothic and early Renaissance. Old masters’ paintings, as well as an extremely rare selection of Flanders Tapestries from the 16th century, comprise the art collection. Visit Catherine de Médicis’ bedroom to view the recently restored Corrège’s painting on wood, "L’Education de l’Amour." Chateau de Chenonceau Reviews
Met zijn viertjes (2 volwassenen, 2 kinderen) hebben we Chenonceau bezocht. Wij vonden het geheel onduidelijk, mogeljjk doordat het gewoon te druk was vandaag. On sight not weird in the high season, but still... Also, we could not take lunch on the grounds, which we find weird. It is logical that you cannot eat it in the castle (and wipe fingers on antique chairs..), but only a little drink could be with it. To have lunch later we went back to the car, packed lunch and eaten on the picnic, that was well looked after. We were allowed to return to the terrain because we had made a mark. The gardens are beautiful, the castle is very much renovated, but the whole is pretty.
Une superbe visite. Le château est superbe, de même que le parc. La fréquentation ne permet pas toujours de profiter pleinement des pièces, cadres et décors. Mais en prenant son temps on profite bien.... more »A great visit. The castle is beautiful, as is the park. Attendance does not always make it possible to fully enjoy the rooms, frames and decorations. But by taking your time you're enjoying it. The garden is superb and the little walk at the water's edge very nice. A good and beautiful time
It is a superb castle. It is built over a river, which gives it a delightful uniqueness. It must be visited. It is very nicely arranged and very well maintained. All the castle and all the exhibits seem to be framed from fairy tales. And floral arrangements that delight your eyes are all over. The domain of the castle is extraordinarily beautiful and also is so well maintained and cared for. Not to be missed. It is amazing!
There's no place like it, a castle right above the water... just stunningly beautiful! I have to admit I even liked it better than Versailles, it's a more cozier place and less crowded. Totally recommend it!
