Trip Planner: Europe / Germany / Bavaria / Franconia / Lower Franconia / Wurzburg / Würzburg Residence
See the world's largest ceiling fresco at Würzburg Residence, the majestic residence of the prince-bishops of Würzburg. Constructed in the early 18th century, the palace combines aspects of French chateau and Viennese Baroque architecture. The fresco is above the palace's grand royal staircase. You can wander through the Imperial Hall with its stucco sculptures, colorful murals, and gold ornamentation. Although you must pay to enter the palace, you can roam the tranquil residence gardens free of charge. This site is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. What a wealth, the ceiling paintings, the tapestries, the mirror room with the many gold. You should not skip this. Also the garden is beautiful.
Amazing views, wonderful architecture, and plenty of fascinating history. We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting the location and exploring. Lots of great photos and memories. We would happily return and spend a day. Winter time was great for us.
Beautiful place. There's a small entrance fee (6.50€ for students, probably more for adults) which includes a tour, but you should check beforehand the timing and language that it would be done in. You're not allowed to take photos of the inside. Might not be worth the price though if you are not the type to appreciate architecture or museums. However, the large outdoor garden is a free for all and would look quite pretty in the summer.
