  • One of the most beautiful experiences we have had lately has been to "go to the operetta". So we went to the opera house in Budapest, one of the most important temples in the world dedicated to this theatrical and musical genre, to attend the show Csardaskiralyno (title in Italian: The Princess of the Ciarda). You begin to get into the atmosphere already when you arrive in the square in front of the theater, where there is a sculpture of the composer Imre Kalman sitting on a bench while admiring the entrance of the theater. In the pavement are inserted the casts of the feet of Hungarian opera singers, artists that everyone here learns to know from an early age because school programs also provide regular participation of schoolchildren in theatrical performances. Recently the operetta theatre has been completely restored, and the rooms have been maintained as they were in 1923, so much so that we too, as we proceeded inside, the feeling that, by magic, we all wore frac and cylinder and ladies the same wonderful dresses of the artists during the show. Of course you don't have to worry about "what to wear"! I recommend the same clothing you choose when you go to dinner with your friends... yes, because the feeling we had was like going to see friends you've always known. And now some impressions on the show..... Scenes, costumes, lights, have once again confirmed the great Hungarian theatrical culture, not to mention the skill and class of artists and the corps de ballet. ON THE BLOCK: Get ready to join all the other viewers when the Hungarian audience (who obviously knows all the airs of the show by heart) will start - several times during the show - to accompany with a titated handshake the most famous motifs operetta sung by the artists..... Some practical tips to allow you to fully enjoy this unforgettable experience: 1) We bought from Italy a few days before tickets on the internet, connecting directly to the website of Budapesti Operettszinhaz, which has English pages. Obviously the offer of the shows is very wide and ranges from operetta to musicals. You will have to take into account the show(s) scheduled at the mome...

  • Here the first operettas were performed in the then Orfeum Theatre from 1898. The theatre was rebuilt in 1920 and is still the only operetta theatre in the city.
