Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum, Budapest

4.5
#2 of 291 in Museums in Hungary
Part of the vast, interconnected caves beneath Castle Hill, Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum served as a nuclear bunker and emergency hospital during 20th-century wartime. During World War II, the 10 km (6 mi) of caves and cellars in this region were connected and used as a bomb shelter. You can visit the hospital portion, where doctors treated civilians and soldiers until July 1945, then again during the 1956 Revolution. Take a guided tour of the hospital, learn more about Hungarian history from 1938 up through the Cold War, and witness the difficult conditions under which doctors and nurses worked in these caves. • I think it's a recommended visit if you go to Budapest. It is a guided tour in English (which is perfectly understood and also offers audioguia in Spanish free) that shows you the whole bunker with representations of how it was years ago with dolls. It is worth around 4000 HUF and has a tour every half hour/hour for which you do not need to pre-book.

  • Very interesting, slightly eccentric museum featuring many waxwork figures and lots of old medical equipment all displayed in the labyrinthine hospital/nuclear bunker. Very friendly and informative guides, and the gift shop will even sell you original gas masks, military clothing and unused syringes from the Cold War era should you wish to take home a souvenir. Highly recommended if you like something off the normal tourist trail.
  • Very interesting tour of an old hospital bunker used during WW2 and the Cold War. Lots of original medical instruments and medicine on show as well as mannequins. Tour guide was very good. Would definitely recommend
