#1 of 290 in Museums in Hungary
Explore the dark side of Hungarian and European history at House of Terror Museum, a specialty museum focusing on fascist and communist regimes. The permanent exhibits feature artifacts from Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and the communist AVH (Hungarian State Protection Authority). Walk into the depths of violent, dictatorial moments that took place the 20th century by stepping into the museum's basement, where AVH prisoners were once held and tortured. These cells serve as a memorial to victims of the country's bloody regimes. Since it opened in 2002, this museum has become a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. • Beautiful building and modern museum. We were looking forward to this visit, but turned out to be a disappointment. Unfortunately, all signs and texts are in Hungarian. There was no more audio explanation available (these were occupied), so we were relying on the English-language a4-tjes with huge rags of text. In each room a new a4-tje, but this only gave a general explanation and unfortunately not per photo, shown film or item. So unfortunately not to follow what it's about for someone who doesn't speak Hungarian. Maybe it's with the English audio explanation to do, but without i wouldn't advise to go.

  • Staff in reception, at the audioguide rental, at the elevator and in the cellars, grumpy. Visitors just bother. Although there were not many people (on a Thursday), there were no more audio guides in Italian. Be careful if you suffer from claustrophobia. To show you a movie they cramm you into a dozen in a glass elevator, which descends one floor using all the time of the movie (shocking, meaningless. Or maybe to make us try to stay locked in a space?). So, without audio guides, almost useless visit.

  • Somber but informative. Didn't get the audio guide but was able to understand a lot of the information thanks to the English cards in each room and the subtitles on videos. Certainly worth the entry price, especially considering the lift down to and the basement itself. Chilling but a needed visit for those interested in Hungarian history.
  • Mostly just TVs on walls with similar footage on all of them, all information is on pieces of paper which you have to read while walking around each room. Nothing special at all. Then you have to go in a lift to get to the basement whether you want to or not which takes ages because there's another TV in the lift With a video same as in the treat of the museum. Saving grace is the basement which has original cells for imprisonment which. Other than that it wasn't worth visiting.
