#1 of 28 in Parks in Punjab
Visit the memorial garden of Jallianwala Bagh, a public park that houses the monument to the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, when British forces opened fire on unarmed civilians celebrating the Punjabi new year. The memorial was established in 1951 by the Indian government, to serve as a somber reminder of the tragedy in which an estimated 1,000 people lost their lives. You can still view numerous bullet marks on the preserved walls of the site, a reminder that a number of people also drowned while trying to escape the bullets. With our custom trip planner, Amritsar attractions like Jallianwala Bagh can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Once you walk in through the narrow lane and enter the vast open space inside, you cannot avoid recreating the scene from decades ago. Just imagining the line of soldiers with blazing guns, the crowd which was being shot at by trained soldiers with no escape is a harrowing experience. After seeing the bullet marks on the walls and the infamous well, one can almost hear the cries for help and the imagine the chaos. The heart rending tales of survivors and relatives inscribed in the museum rooms add to the overall experience. A must visit site for anyone even remotely interested in Indian history.
