Chiesa di San Severo reviews
We popped into the church on our last day in Bardolino, having just got off the bus outside. It's a beautiful spot, historic and well preserved, but also unrestored, the frescos inside are mostly... more »

The church of San Severo is a medieval building in Bardolino, located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda: built in its current form between the end of the 11th and early 12th centuries on a pre-existing building dating back to at least the 9th century, it is considered a masterpiece of local Romanesque art. It is best known for its precious frescoes. The church is located at the entrance of the city, in the northern part of the same. The exterior is characterized by the high bell tower, built in living stone and which has a reddish end. It is not only the bell cell, reconstructed during the 19th century, that is original. The absidi are also the result of a reconstruction of the original ones from the 14th century. The facade is oriented to the west, as in all Romanesque churches. The interior is three aisles and has a wooden ceiling and brick and tuff columns. The interiors are decorated with frescoes depicting the life of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the Apostles and motifs of the Apocalypse of St. John and the legend on the discovery of the true Cross. These frescoes, which have similarities to those of other buildings in the province of Verona, are counted, for their breadth and richness of motifs, among the best examples at European level. Inside there is also a crypt, which probably refers to a pre-existing long-existing building of the 8th and 9th centuries. The oldest mention of the original building dates back to the year 893, particularly in a diploma of Berengario del Friuli where it is written "in Garda juxta ecclesiam Sancti Severi". The building was later redone and expanded between the 11th and 12th centuries. The church of San Severo later became a parish church, but later experienced a period of decay. It was saved from ruin thanks to the intervention of the brothers of the Holy Sacrament, who had moved to the nearby church during the 19th century. Between 1927 and 1943, extensive restoration work was undertaken by the Royal Superintendent.
