Basilica di San Domenico, Bologna

4.6
Just a small church when Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of the Preachers, came to Bologna in 1218, Basilica di San Domenico grew quickly after the saint’s death in 1221. Outside, you will see the Romanesque facade that dates back to 1240. The interior was redone in a Baroque style in the early 1700s. Visit the shrine to Saint Dominic, which holds his sarcophagus to this day, and admire the many works of art within the church, including early sculptures by Michelangelo. When not busy, the lights inside the chapel are often switched off, so ask for them to be turned on before you enter. • Certainly among the most beautiful churches in the city, made around the year 1250 is dedicated to San Domenico. It contains many works of art, including the Chapel of San Domenico and the Chapel of the Rosary, remarkable the Crucifixion of Giunta Pisano of 1250. Attached to the basilica also a large cloister with remains of frescoes of the same era.

  • From Piazza Maggiore to the south, you can reach The Basilica of St. Domenico in about seven minutes on foot. Three works by Michelangelo 19-year-old in the sarcophagus of St. Domenico in the Chapel of St. Domenico, which was followed by a preliminary study. We visited the statue of the archeoran of the candlestick, the statue of St. Petronius, the statue of St. Procruz, (3) the inlaid choir seat, and (4) the organ played by Mozart as a must see. Outside, there are also tampans depicting St. Domenico at the central entrance of the cathedral entrance, frescoes of Guido Leni 'The Glory of St. Domenico' in the canopy of the Chapel of St. Domenico, and a fresco by Filipino Lippi in the Chapel of St. Caterina. I was able to see the frescoes of "The Marriage of St. Caterina". After five nights in Bologna and visiting several cathedrals and churches, the statues of the Basilica of St. Domenico and the Church of Santa Maria della Vita were the most memorable and interesting.

  • Just wow! Make sure you go into the choir bit at the back and check out the wood inlay seating (I'm sure there's a posh name for where the choir sit but I don't know what it is). Really quite something.
  • This church is magnificent, I like it. Above all I love this church because it contains the mortal remains of saint Dominic. There are also several paintings which are very beautiful.
