Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo), Venice

4.5
#13 of 73 in Historic Sites in Venice
The main church of the Dominican order in Venice, Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo (San Zanipolo) boasts an expansive brick façade and a spacious interior. Among the church's many funerary monuments and paintings rest the remains of 25 of Venice’s doges. Gaze at the ornately decorated and painted ceiling of the Chapel of the Rosary, and seek out the Byzantine statue of Madonna della Pace. Don’t miss the main relic of the church, the foot of St. Catherine of Siena. Huge Church (the largest in Venice) located at the side of the hospital into a huge square. Contains numerous works of art, in various chapels, but what most impresses is the size of this ancient basilica, preserved cme originally. The chapel of the Rosary, with beautiful reliefs and paintings and the large stained glass window by 22 metres, in the right transept. The visits are paid (€ 3.50). Closed from 13 to 14.

The Venetian Church. The penalty is that the choir was removed as well as many other changes. Many of the famous people of Venice are aware in this church

  • Lots of neat shopping, but know the unique pieces are going to be the most expensive ones. There's a lot to see here, if you like glass blowing.
  • Magnificent experience as I touched a bit of Venetian history. Spacious, beautifully decorated.
  • I am there I am lucky to have that I Amin holiday na ha
  • Amazing buildings. I wish I had more time to see more details
  • An amazing church! I arrived at night while they held a celebration, so I had to leave. The security guy allowed me to take a picture inside the Basilica, but just for personal, so I'd better not share it here :P. I probably will visit it again.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
