San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

4.8
You access San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th-century Benedictine church, by boat. As you approach the island, notice how the structure's white marble facade contrasts with the blue of the lagoon. Enter to discover its equally bright interior. Admire several paintings by Venice-born Renaissance artist Tintoretto, as well as many other religious artworks. You can take the elevator up to the bell tower for a small fee to discover views of the Venetian Lagoon. • A few minutes vaporetto ride from St Marks Square this offered an oasis of peace and calm away from the mad tourist rush. The basilica was open to view an exhibition there , plus 'The Last Supper' pai...  more »
  • To see Venice, the place San Marco, by far, the lido, the lagoon... (view spoiled by the MST cruise ship) is the place to come. The exhibition, the campanile... are beautiful places, there is even a brick of Murano glass snake!

  • This little island stands out for its church with enormous Dome, facing right in front of St. mark, clearly visible from the vaporetto that goes through the channel and that makes you stop.

  • Wonderful view of Venice, less people and lower cost to go into the bell tower. It was great we arrived at 11:45 and stayed to listen to the bells, very loud but such a memorable experience.
  • The view from the belltower is so beautiful. It was €6 regular and €4 for the discounted price. Best view of the city and lagoon.
  • Peaceful location compared with the hustle and bustle of other parts of Venice. Great views from the church tower
  • The most breathtaking view of Venice and the lagoon.
  • You are going to stunning view at entire Venice from the belfry of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
