Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice

4.6
#8 of 73 in Historic Sites in Venice
Admire the majestic facade of Scuola Grande di San Rocco but be sure to go inside and look up. The large 16th-century wall and ceiling paintings by Tintoretto have led to comparisons with the Sistine Chapel. Originally built between 1489 and 1508, the church was overhauled in 1725. The rarely crowded church is next to the better-known Scuola Di San Rocco, also known for its Tintoretto works. Note the church has a dress code, with no shorts allowed. This is incredible! In my opinion, this is a must-see and I was shocked by how few people were visiting. The large main hall has ceiling and wall paintings by Tintoretto. One could spend hours looking...  more »

Just a room to visit for €10 and staff is unfriendly and not audiovisual guide available. Very disappointed

Though its entrance is € 10, it is necessary to enter and see this old school art. The great Hall is reminiscent of one of the rooms of the Palace uffizi in Florence or the own Palace ducal

Be prepared for an absolutely amazing experience. The ground floor does not prepare you for the magnificent room waiting for you upstairs... Tintoretto at his best! Even if you are not an art fan/expert you will be impressed.

Entry is 10€ for adults and children 18 and under will be free with an adult. Many beautiful pieces of art in the building by Tintoretto. Best paintings are on the second floor

Venice's only gothic church, it's well worth a visit. I recommend Rick Steve's free audio guide to get more info about the architecture and amazing artwork.

Extraordinary art, should not be missed when in Venice. Tintoretto's paintings are fabulous, but the wooden sculptures on the upper floor are magnificent.

If you want you can use mirrors to see the ceiling paintings. I didn't use them. I just enjoyed what i could see. Too many details and too many work on the walls too so take your time 😊

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
