St Mark's Campanile, Venice

4.6
#4 of 73 in Historic Sites in Venice
Overlooking the city's famous lagoon, St Mark's Campanile is one of the Venice's most recognizable symbols. Originally constructed as a lighthouse, this 99 m (323 ft) tall bell tower stands alone in one corner of St. Mark's Square. The tower's simple form has a fluted brick shaft topped by a belfry housing five bells. A pyramidal spire with a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel caps the tower. Constructed in the ninth century on ancient Roman foundations, the bell tower underwent a massive reconstruction after a sudden collapse in 1902. Once the site of Galileo's observatory, the tower now features an elevator for easy access to the top and views of the lagoon and distant Alps. It is not an essential place but climbing gives a beautiful view of the lagoon of Venice. I do not consider it cheap (€8 / pers) but it is not a waste of time.

We went about 9am so barely queued and believe it or not we spent about an hour at the top listening to the audio guide and taking photos. At 12 noon the bells ring, so if you can face the queues befo...  more »

  • Fairly priced and with excellent views look g out over large areas of Venice. Lift up and down with a small shop at the top. Well worth a visit.
  • Absolutely amazing! Must visit if you're in Venice! Be aware of the queues, luckily when I was there I only had to wait less then 10 mins! But totally worth it! Pro tip: when you're up there everybody taking their time enjoying the view which is understandable yet might be a bit annoying...find the spots with the telescopes and if you can squeeze through same view less people 😂👍🏻
  • The old one got destroyed in early 20th century, but this is still impressive (Venetian has a model of this). The problem is the going down part. There's a long line to go down the elevator. Cash only. You get a nice view of Venice, but you can't see the tiny canals.
  • An ideal place to see Venice. It's definitely the best view on "mainland" Venice. On nice days there are long lines, but it's worth it.
  • The tower gives you a spectacular panoramic view of Venice and surrounding islands, though a little bit pricey (8 euros). Worth a visit if the weather's clear.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
