St. Mark's Square, Venice

4.5
Venice's principal public space, St. Mark's Square has served as the city's social, religious, and political center for centuries. In fact, Napoleon called the square "the drawing room of Europe." It's the largest square in the city and the only one given the designation of "piazza" (the others are all called "campi"). Originally constructed in the ninth century as a small public space dotted with trees, the square was substantially enlarged in the 12th century and was paved with bricks in the 13th. Several major architectural sites surround the area. The most notable is an imposing church dedicated to St. Mark. Don't feed the pigeons--city law forbids feeding the birds in the square. • We sat in St. Mark's for about an hour to relax after a morning of intense touring. We sat on the steps at the far end in the shade, which was quite pleasant (aside from the vendors shoving roses into...  more »
  • If you go high season will see infinite world. But after fascinating at the Centre and includes the half top 10 drivers not playing not to see. A perimeter ride deserves to make a and has many shops for all pockets.

  • Beautiful Square, never a bad time to visit although best enjoyed in the morning before most tourists are out; however, what lets the Square is the lack of proper restaurants or cafés rather than just...  more »

  • Great place to go.. To get into the main church it's free but we got ticked by a lady saying English tour I guild you there where about 20 different people and half way she asked for 20euros the tour with her was great in the end so be warned. No photos aloud... And other thing no back packs they send you away to other place to leave bags... Lovely inside enjoy it
  • A very impressive square where no one was sitting having coffee, they all probably read the reviews of how expensive it is. The one thing that did put me off was the pushy street sellers especially the ones with roses who try to hand them to children of suspecting parents. I would recommend going to the museum in St. Marks to take pictures as there will be a better no one to bother you well worth the 5 euro entrance fee.
  • Hard to find words to describe this beautiful place. I was last there 35 years ago and thought I might have an exaggerated memory of it but it was just as wonderful as I remembered. This time I was able to share with my daughter who was also totally entranced by it
  • It's not crowded around 6am where at least 2 couples prepare for there wedding pics. Have an early morning run and enjoy the magic moments with no expensive coffees, cover charges and pick pockets or too motivated roses sellers. Good running route is along the pier towards the park.
  • If you are looking for the best experience of your life, visit St. Mark's Square at 3 am with your partner. Not just visit, but have a some food there with a bottle of wine. Being along in such historic and magnificent place will give you a great feeling of owning this place. Check my pics.

Where to stay in Venice

Save money and avoid tourist crowds by booking your accommodation outside the historical center of Venice. Central Venice is full of picturesque canals and narrow lanes, but it is also extremely noisy and hectic throughout the day and late into the night. You can explore the ancient city's charms at your own pace by staying at a comfortable B&B or small hotel located in the city's residential suburbs. To stay close to the finest beaches and restaurants, check into a hotel on the island of Lido, the city's famous seaside resort.
