St. Mark's Square, Venice

4.5
Venice's principal public space, St. Mark's Square has served as the city's social, religious, and political center for centuries. In fact, Napoleon called the square "the drawing room of Europe." It's the largest square in the city and the only one given the designation of "piazza" (the others are all called "campi"). Originally constructed in the ninth century as a small public space dotted with trees, the square was substantially enlarged in the 12th century and was paved with bricks in the 13th. Several major architectural sites surround the area. The most notable is an imposing church dedicated to St. Mark. Don't feed the pigeons--city law forbids feeding the birds in the square. • Beautiful scenery on a beautiful day. Get the most out of your visit to Venice by picking a day with good leather and getting there early in the morning too avoid crowds. 8:30am was nice since shops are opening/opened by then. Also check when high tide is for that day, since the whole island floods during that time. You can still walk around and enjoy your visit during high tide though. The city sets up these 3ft high or so platforms that act as new sidewalks when the water is high. Definitely a different experience though!
  • Very-very impressive buildings! All ways life, classic music. Pretty crazy if you consider this piazza is more than 1m / 3 feet under water once a year....the buildings are so incredibly beautiful! The Engineering behind it is amazing and appears almost magic 😉 go visit it!- before it might be gone...
  • So it's summer, it is hot and Venice is popular. It's a huge square and you want to focus on everything all at once. The architecture is stunning. There's a gorgeous clock face with carved zodiac signs. People are milling about of various ethnicities and cultures. It was touristy and it was awesome
  • To get a good view of the piazza, come in the early morning before the masses of tourists arrive. While at this location, don't miss the Basilica from the inside. The gold pleated walls and ceilings with all kinds of mosaic work are incredible. The stone Floors are detailed with geometric patterns. The Doge's Palace is right next door and should also be part of your trip.
  • Visited in winter so not too busy. Did clock tour (book at museum) which was very good with great views from the top. Amazing clock and history. Our guide was local and very knowledgeable. Florian's expensive but an experience (in the footsteps of Casanova!) Museum excellent with reasonably priced cafe with views of square. Basilica usual mix of gold and icons but free entry and worth a look. The four horses have a history to them.
