Take in the serenity and artistry at Kencho-ji Temple, a commanding Zen Buddhist temple known for its carefully designed gardens and grand architecture. Completed in 1253 under the command of Emperor Go-Fukakusa, the temple originally boasted 49 subtemples, most of which were lost to fire during the 14th and 15th centuries. As you explore the extensive complex, note the 13th-century temple bell, Chinese juniper trees in the temple garden, and the finely ornamented roofs and walls. The temple welcomes visitors to participate in 40-minute zazen meditation sessions, providing brief instruction on posture and the tenets of Zen Buddhism beforehand (in Japanese). North of the complex, hiking trails lead farther up the hill to an observatory. Plan to visit Kencho-ji Temple during your Kamakura vacation using our convenient Kamakura route planner.

Kencho-ji Temple Reviews
境内には国宝や重要文化財などの文化財がたくさんあ... more »It is the first large temple in Kamakura Goyama in the Kita-Kamakura area and is a typical zen temple in kanto. The 5th power of the Kamakura Shogunate, the famous hojo Toyori, is opened by inviting the Zen monk of Nansong, Rankei Michitaka. Looking at the precincts map, the cathedral arrangement of the gate, the mountain gate, the Buddhist hall, and the temple is arranged in a straight line from the time of the creation, and all are wonderful buildings. It is the first of Kamakura Goyama indeed. Only zen temples have a simple color, but it has a solemn atmosphere. There are a lot of cultural properties such as national treasures and important cultural properties in the precincts, and it is a vast precinct which is more than 700m in a straight line when walking from the general gate of the entrance to the half-monk in the back. It takes at least an hour and a half to see properly. Not only the buildings, but also the huge biakshin trees and gardens are wonderful. You need to pay a visit here. It is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children, and the viewing time is 8:30-16:30. The parking lot is at the entrance, but a normal car cost 600 yen per hour. If you want to take a leisurely tour, is it good to visit the train? The nearest station might not change so much from Kita-Kamakura Station or Kamakura Station. There are many other wonderful temples nearby, and there are many other places to visit besides Kencho-ji Temple.
more »A day hike on the Tenzono hiking trail in the Kamakura Alps. The climbing entrance is kenchoji temple. It was built on the chinese Zen-sect style, which is a straight line between the gate, the three gates, the Buddhist temple, the temple, the temple, and the hodo, and the length of the square. I go up the stairs, but mt. Fuji is also seen from the half-statue, so i'll take a look.
