Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, Koganei

4.5
Wander the green fields of Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, peppered with a range of historic structures that give a sense of traditional Japanese design. Over the years, Tokyo has lost many prized examples of its idiosyncratic architectural accomplishments to cataclysms, but across this 7 hectare (17 acre) park you'll have the chance to inspect some of these historic building styles in detail, inside and out. The variety of buildings salvaged and relocated from the city includes everything from upper-class homes, pre-war shops, and public baths to Western-style buildings of the Meiji period. Notably, this evocative and comprehensive museum provided visionary animation director Hayao Miyazaki with inspiration while working on his masterpiece "Spirited Away." • It's a bit off the beaten path and if you take the train, you need to take another bus to get there. It is a nice break though from the usual crowds of tourists at Asakusa, shopping at Shibuya or.....  more »

  • This is basically an amazing spot for literally anything. There is a museum that you can pay for and enjoy old buildings. Then there is the park outside that is just huge. It is used for viewing the cherry blossom and playing with snow in the winter. During the summer time, it’s just a great place to hang out in the evening seriously! You can ride your bike, go jogging or play soccer. Whatever your fancy is. The parking is a bit expensive however. Also, I do recommend car or bicycle when coming here. It’s a large park and walking with take the whole day to see every thing. This basically an all round park. You can’t regret coming here.
  • Super interesting, with some fascinating buildings to look in and lots of staff and volunteers to show you around. A little English is spoken, and most of the signs are also bilingual. The highlight is probably the shopping street, with a liquor store, and a sento recreation. There's a small restaurant which is not bad, and a good gift shop. Also, many buildings require no shoes so wear clean socks (!) There is some shelter, but a lot of being outside so wrap up warm or bring plenty of drinks depending on the weather.
