Oze National Park, Japan

4.6
#180 of 2,782 in Nature in Japan
Enjoy excellent hikes across an open green space spreading over four prefectures at Oze National Park, a 372 sq km (143 sq mi) park some 150 km (93 mi) north of Tokyo. Well-maintained trails, spectacular waterfalls, and a huge pond stand out as the highlights of this popular hiking destination. Walk on planks across vast Ozegahara marshes, the most visited part of the park, which sit around 1,400 m (4,593 ft) above sea level. Observe skunk cabbage, yellow lily, red weeds, and colored grass as you walk. In order to preserve the nature, you will walk on logs and planks most of the time. You can stay overnight in the park's small hotel. To visit Oze National Park and other attractions in Japan, use our Japan online day trip planner .

  • Oze is a huge natural reserve, which extends to four prefectures: Gunma, Niigata, Tochigi and Fukushima. The highlights of Oze are Ozegahara and Ozenuma. But both places are far away, and since drivin...  more »
  • The temperature in the city on the day of the visit was hot around 36 degrees! Surprisingly, it was cool here! In the evening, we soaked slowly in the open-air bath of the accommodation Shobean Onsen Hanagi-no-yado, and then ate delicious Japanese food. There were many varieties from Wagyu shabu to rock fish salt grilled. At night, I slept comfortably about 24 degrees, and slept soundly. The next day, the roadside going to Oe wetland was beautiful with a lot of rare wild plants! I was tired on the way back, but I enjoyed the natural scenery! I think it's the best summer resort on a summer's day.

  • Oze National Park, is an area consisting of open greenland in Fukushima, Tochigi, Gunma and Niigata Prefectures in Japan. The park is 372 km² in area and is the 29th national park in Japan. Opened on 30 August 2007, the park's area includes the marshes (Ozegahara) and the mountains in the Oze area, formerly part of the Nikkō National Park, and other nearby areas including the Aizu-Komagatake and Tashiroyama mountains. The park was the first new national park to open in 20 years, since the designation of Hokkaidō's Kushiro wetlands as a national park in 1987. It was an part of Nikko National Park a time ago. The establishment of Nikkō National Park dates to the early 20th century. The Diet of Japan designated Nikkō an imperial park in 1911. The National Parks Law was passed in 1931, and Nikkō National Park was established in 1934. The park was expanded throughout the 20th century. Oze National Park was once part of Nikkō National Park, but became a separate national park in 2007.
