A World Heritage Site dating back to 1872, Tomioka Silk Mill represents the oldest example of a silk reeling factory in Japan. An important symbol of industrial development under the Meiji government, the mill maintains its condition to a high standard, with much of the warehouse kept exactly as it was when it closed in 1987. Explore four vast sites, each corresponding to different stages of silk production, from a cold storage facility for silk worm eggs, to the large raw silk reeling plant. Tomioka Silk Mill Reviews
I could feel World heritage certified value. They keep well assets. And Visitors can study Japanese Industrial revolution. more »
First modern large scale silk mill in Japan, built with the initiative of the Japanese government in 1870s. The good reputation of 'Made in Japan quality' as we know it today probably started here..... more »
1,000 yen isn’t bad but all the signs are in Japanese only. For being a world heritage building since 2014, you’d think they’d get on with the signs. There’s a second area but you have to pay again to go in. The history is great but they could do more about the history of silk overall as well. You get a small glance at some of the old machines but mostly all the newer type machines. It’s in renovation
Interesting place with rich history, there is a website with English audio files of the Japanese audio guide. A bit expensive; I can't quite remember the price.
