Kinpusenji Temple, Yoshino-cho

Explore the second largest wooden structure in Japan at Kinpusenji Temple. Also known as "the temple of golden peaks," the site was established in the mid-seventh century by En no Gyoja, the founder of the Shugendo Mountain Ascetic sect of Buddhism, and remains the Shugendo headquarters today. Of note here are the Zao Gongen, the main idols of worship in the faith, aged at over 1300 years old and standing up to 7 m (23 ft) in height. The statues are so sacred they are only displayed twice a year, during spring and autumn. Look out for smaller examples of the statues around the site, and in photographs in the brochure.
