St. John's Co-Cathedral, Valletta

4.7
Considered one the finest examples of High Baroque architecture in Europe, St. John's Co-Cathedral represents one of the world's celebrated churches. The impressive structure was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. Though the exterior is somewhat rough, resembling a military fort, the interior boasts intricately carved walls, a painted vaulted ceiling, and a marble floor made up of Knight's tombs. Visit the cathedral's seven chapels, all filled with elaborate riches and dedicated to the different patron saints of the Knights. Don't miss Caravaggio's masterpiece, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" (1608) in the Oratory, for which it was commissioned. An informative audio guide is included in the price of admission. Note that high heels are not permitted in the cathedral to preserve the marble floor. Slippers can be purchased on site. • Wow what a place to visit. Spent a few hours walking around this beautiful place. The caravaggio painting was my main reason to visit but overall it was breathtaking inside the whole cathedral.  more »

  • Beautiful and magic cathedral in Valletta. Very nice outside and inside. I recommend to visit during the nigth... Consider that in Valletta after 8.00 pm o'clock all shop and Restaurant are closed, so to visit It is fantastic because there are very few people around and the atmosphere is magical. Impossible not to give 5 stars...
  • St. John's cathedral in Valletta is a must see when you are on Malta. Sadly that also means long queues unless you manage to get there around 9 am as most tourists doesn't turn up until after 10 am. The Catholic cathedral was built for the Order of St. John at the end of the 1500s and is great architectural structure but the interior is the most impressive, there are several altars with intricate paintings and marvellous ceiling decorations and paintings. You can easily spend a few hours here if you follow the free audio guide and stop to appreciate the artwork and the heritage it supports. Don't miss it!
