Ananda Temple, Bagan

#2 of 116 in Things to do in Bagan
A well-preserved masterpiece of Bagan architecture, Ananda Temple displays delicate stone-carved facades and an impressive pyramid-shape structure, with a magnificent gilted central tower that can be seen from far away. Built in 1105, this outstanding example of fine craftsmanship, a landmark of Bagan, has been well-restored, and still displays some of the original murals and stucco. Marvel at four 9.5 m (31 ft) tall gilded statues of standing Buddhas inside this simple but very large corridor temple. A popular escape from the busy city, the grandiose 53 by 53 m (174 by 174 ft) yard of the temple provides tranquility set against the tall carved cliff. Take an ox-drawn cart for a time machine trip during your visit to this must-see attraction. To visit Ananda Temple and other attractions in Bagan, use our Bagan road trip planner .

  • This is the newly renovated pagoda. In the temple, there is a Buddha statue on the four sides, but the hands are not the same as the oldest Buddha image. When we stand away, look to your face to smile very wide. Get closer to the smile, close enough to the point, and your face will bow down to the floor. The pagoda has 3 laps.

  • It is one of the largest in Bagan and was built between 1091 and 1105 during the reign of King Kyanzittha. It is beautifully restored. Inside, several Buddha statues are covered with gold leaf. There is a Buddha footprint in the entrance hall. Overall, one of the more beautiful temples that offers many things to see.

  • Historical & beautiful temple where can see ancient architecture standard. I loved it.
  • A truly majestic and divine temple of Buddha. The Archaeological Survey of India has done a splendid job of restoration after the temple was damaged by earthquake. The chemical restoration process has brought back the pristine brilliance of this sprawling structure. There are many bells around the complex that one can sound. A totally fulfilling visit.
