Shwezigon Pagoda, Bagan

4.5
Built at the end of the 11th century by the father of the Burmese nation, King Anawrahta, Shwezigon Pagoda represents a priceless reliquary and pilgrimage center for thousands of Buddhist devotees. The holy site enshrines a collection of sacred relics, including Buddha's collarbone, tooth, and emerald images imported from China. The cone-shaped pagoda with five terraces has endured many earthquakes and natural disasters throughout history, but it was restored several times and, until recently, reinforced with 30,000 copper plates for better protection. Head inside to witness the inscribed pillars, golden bell, shrines with Gupta-style statues of Buddha, and the hall of 37 nats (revered spirits). Beware of ticket scalpers at the entrance, as they can get pushy and distractive. Plan to visit Shwezigon Pagoda during your Bagan vacation using our convenient Bagan route planning app .

  • Almost lost among thousands of other small and large temples, this Pagoda is very fascinating. Ancient, imposing and shimmering with gold, it retains the charm and beauty of its colors and its architectural structure. Don't miss it!

  • Beautifully constructed on the hill. It is the best to do some researches about this pagoda before you go, as there are mysteries which you can discover till today. Overall, a good place except that the floor which is extremely hot.
  • It felt like a city made of gold and marble. The sheer size of the pagoda in the center of this complex is enough to inspire awe. As you walk around, you also encounter many priests of the Buddhist faith. You can see dozens of different temples to explore in this complex. Definitely worth a visit if you are currently in Yangon.
