Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, Taunggyi

3.3
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Taunggyi
At Hpaung Daw U Pagoda, see the five statues representing Buddha, so thickly covered with golden leaves as to be barely recognizable. Over the years, men--only men are allowed to place leaves on the statues--have venerated the statues by adorning them with golden leaves. You can see how the statues once looked--before they took distorted hourglass shapes--by looking at the historic photos hanging from the walls of the pagoda. At the boathouse next to the pagoda, see a ceremonial boat shaped like a hintha bird. Once a year, four of the five statues are placed on the boat and taken on a procession around the lake. Shops selling Shan-style costumes and other traditional items surround the pagoda. See Hpaung Daw U Pagoda and all Taunggyi has to offer by arranging your trip with our Taunggyi travel app .
