Dunedin Chinese Garden
Escape the bustle of the city at the tranquil Dunedin Chinese Garden, designed in the style of late Ming/early Qing gardens. Sheltered by 4 m (14 ft) walls, wander the paths from courtyard to courtyard, among immaculately landscaped vegetation that changes with the turning of the seasons. In addition to a large lake, the garden features a traditional tea house, serving Chinese teas, steamed buns, and dumplings. Puzzles and games offer mental diversion, while an audio guide explains the history of the Chinese in Dunedin. This is a really beautiful place. The gardens are well thought out and done really well, creating a serene environment with beautiful rock structure, intricate buildings and calming water. There is also an area where you can listen to live music, and another where there are some small things laid out, such as calligraphy practice, Chinese checkers and a challenge of transferring marbles using chopsticks.

My wife and I spent some time at the Dunedin Chinese Garden on a dull and cold November morning. The serenity of the facility was a highlight, with attractive vistas at every turn. There were some panels outlining some of the aspects of the development of the Chinese community in the area. This was interesting to us as we were unaware of these issues. The walkways are mostly undercover so do not be deterred from visiting if it is raining. Easily combined with a visit to ‘The first settlers museum’ next door.
