Katiki Point Lighthouse, Moeraki

Visit the southern point of Moeraki Peninsula at Katiki Point Lighthouse, home to fur seals and yellow-eyed penguins. Take a tour of the historical lighthouse that dates from 1878 and enjoy the magnificent coastal views. Enter a reserve and view a breeding site for yellow-eyed penguins from a bird hide, where you can observe with disturbing the animals. Remember to keep noise to a minimum and remain off the beach. Keep your eyes peeled for native fur seals, too, which laze on rocky platforms around the coast. If you go to fish, be sure to use the designated coastal access point. • A very beautiful nature park, which is well maintained. Touristically it is not as crowded as the Moeraki Boulders and also more worth seeing. We were very lucky to see a yellow-eyed penguin :) a great highlight. Many sea lions are also on site and rest in the high grass. It can happen quickly that you walk along the walk and suddenly a sea lion rests there. You should still keep your distance as desired. Also to the penguins. Some of them are also locked off where they can withdraw. In our time the seagulls also got their babies and one side was full of seagull mamas and their babies. Very nice to watch the little babies. Great park! Great work is being done there! Always!

  • Beautiful old lighthouse. Lovely walk down to the seals (didn't see any penguins). Easy hill walk for all ages. Small to medium sized carpark, and there's a long drop toilet 5 meters along the walking track.
  • A beautiful old wooden lighthouse accessible by a short walk over uneven ground so probably difficult for wheelchair access. This place is a must for photographers to get an iconic lighthouse photograph. Cheers
