Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park, Taupo District

Witness nature's power at work and admire the breathtaking landscapes at Orakei Korako Cave & Thermal Park. Known for centuries for its geysers, thermal pools, terraces, and naturally carved geological formations, this area remains one of New Zealand's oldest and best-known tourist attractions. The famous Ruatapu Cave, with its pool of warm acid water, is just one of numerous monuments of geothermal activity you'll encounter in the area. A network of boardwalks gives you easy access to all of the thermal field's main points of interest, but be aware that numerous steps along the trail make it difficult to navigate for wheelchairs. However, the visitor's center is fully accessible to everyone, and in addition to souvenirs, informative material, and cold drinks it provides free-of-charge baby carriers to visitors with little ones. • Well worth the short detour off Highway 1. It is an amazing microcosm of geothermal activity with a well laid out self guided, mostly boardwalk tour, around a loop of active small geysers, steam vents...  more »
  • We were told about the hidden valley and weren’t sure what to expect but this was an amazing experience, very well managed with the ferry on demand and the boardwalks designed to make the walk as easy...  more »
  • One of nicer and more picturesque thermal parks. Short boat trip across the lake to get to the features. Nice gentle walk around the place along well constructed paths and walkways. The place is considerably warmer due to the volcanic activity so recommend taking water and staying cool.
  • A brief ferry ride and a good walk where you get to see a variety of geothermal features in some really beautiful scenery. The boardwalks are well maintained and the signs are informative. Staff were friendly. Didn't try the cafe but the building was nice and modern and the toilets were clean. They say it takes an hour to walk around but if you like to stop and take photos allow 1.5 to 2 hours
