Tawhai Falls, Tongariro National Park

#3 of 7 in Nature in Tongariro National Park
Located within a national park, Tawhai Falls drop over the edge of a 13 meter (43 ft) cliff. The falls can be reached via an easy trail that leads from the small parking lot and through a forest of beech and mountain celery pine. The steps near the end of the trail make it inaccessible to wheelchairs. Fans of "The Lord of the Rings" will be delighted to discover this was one of the movie's filming locations. Tawhai Falls is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Tongariro National Park Edition.

  • A short 800 meters round-trip walk through the forest until you come to a pretty waterfall. It is easy to climb a few rocks in the water in several places, from where you can take pictures. Absolutely recommended for a short stopover!
