Discover one of the most significant private collections of post-war and contemporary art in Northern Europe at Astrup Fearnley Museet. The permanent collection, once dominated by paintings and sculptures by American and European artists, now features art from India, Japan, China, and Brazil as well. The museum's three pavilions sit against the waterfront backdrop in a neighborhood that used to house docks and shipyards. Notice how the maritime theme is reflected in a sail-shaped glass roof and mast-like steel columns. The museum also features strange works, like a cow split in half and submerged in formaldehyde by controversial British artist Damian Hurst. Though being surprisingly small, the museum is intriguing with a pretty souvenir store. Worth seeing for everyone interested in art and worth walking around it to get to a small public beach. You... more »
This place is definitely worth your time and money. Can't say I enjoyed every piece of art, but it's something so different it provoked so many different emotions in me, I left very impressed. From things you can't wrap your mind around thinking 'how on earth somebody just woke up with a though of cutting some carpet and then called it art' to some magnificent pieces. Only downside was only exhibition available was the permanent one, but nothing that could have been done about that.
A beautifully placed modern art museum with two buildings with each exhibitions (one with featured exhibition and another with permanent installation). It's a nice walking distance along the pier of the fjord in Oslo from the Nobel Centre. Free cloakroom facilities and various interesting merchandise to purchase. Very worth visiting.
