Dedicated to one of Norway's most well-known pioneering spirits, Kon-Tiki Museum displays the vessels, artifacts, and personal effects of Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl famously set sail in 1947 on a raft from South America and traveled to Polynesia in order to reinforce his theory about pre-Columbian island colonization. Visit the museum to see the Kon-Tiki craft used on this excursion, as well as other reed boats Heyerdahl employed on later expeditions. Wander the different exhibits focused on Heyerdahl's life, his vessels, and the life and culture of the islands he visited. Don't miss the collection of more than 8,000 books--a tribute to Heyerdahl's prolific career as a scientist, researcher, and writer. I’m wasn't familiar with Kon Tiki. Until I visited the museum. I got so much out of it. The original boats the Ra is also here to look at. I didn’t know it was a book that won an Oscar. They recreated... more »
It’s a cute little museum dedicated to the achievement of the valiant sailors who made Easter Islands and its statues a household name, especially featured in the movie: Night at the Museum. But besides the two brilliantly presented boats, I was a bit shocked by the lack of further elements of the journey, especially during the preparation phases. Hope they improve upon it.
Smallish museum in the cluster of three museums in the peninsula, depicting the life and adventure of Thor Hyberdahl. Nice exhibit includes the replica of the boat that Thor used in his adventure, showing and proving that seafaring in the ancient time was possible with straws and wood logs. One can easily spend a couple of hours here. The gift shop carries some nice Nordic trinkets for you to remember your trip.
