Architect Arne Korsmo

Villa Stenersen was designed in 1939 by Arne Korsmo, one of Norway's most renowned architects. It was planned as a family residence for Rolf E. Stenersen, finance broker, art collector and friend of Edvard Munch. Arne Korsmo is known as an internationally oriented architect. Villa Stenersen is a clear example of how the architect interpreted and applied international architectural ideas of his time.

A house for art

As well as being a family home, the villa housed numerous works of art in Rolf Stenersen's collection. Korsmo's architectural solutions are to a great extent designed with regard to this, something which gives the house some of its unique characteristics. Today, contemporary artworks on loan from the private collection of Rolf Stenersen's nephew Sten Stenersen jr. are displayed in the house.

Rolf Stenersen donated the villa to the Norwegian government in 1974. Since 2000, the Foundation for Design and Architecture in Norway administers the use of the villa on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture.

  • It is a piece of travel but it's worth it. A beautiful modernist house built in the 1930s. Only open on Sunday, with a number of tours throughout the day. Even though I was the only one for whom the tour in English to follow was better this was done by a very enthusiastic guide in English. Both the access to the property as the tour are free of charge.

  • We joined the excursion around the villa first and then had a great lunch on a balcony with a spectacular view of Oslo. It was definitely worth a 30 minute walk from the Vigeland park.  more »

  • Very nice and important piece of Norwegian design and architecture. A bit worn down, not entirely bad as it brings some authenticity. This is history after all. Very nice guided tours.
  • Interesting but not essential to see
