Castelo de S. Jorge, Lisbon

4.2
Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. Plan to see Castelo de S. • The castle is not something special. I believe that it had to be free. The only thing that really worths is the view from up there. It is fantastic!  more »
  • Thirty-one years (give or take a week or two) after my first trip up to the top of Lisbon, I made my latest pilgrimage to the Castle. I'm sure that I paid nothing in 1989 and according to my review...  more »

  • Interesting castle. Not much to see on the outside but has an interesting set up on the inside. The best part about this place is it has some of the best views of Lisbon. It's one of the popular lookout points. Fairly cheap admission as well. I took a tram ride there from the main square. Overall a fun experience.
  • Loved it here. Great views 360 ° and lots to see inside. Being able to walk the castle walls was great. Lovely walk up to the castle too, or take the 28 Tram. Top tip. If there is a huge queue, buy on line and you go straight in via the e ticket line. Don't just join the queue.
