Ponta de Sao Lourenco, Machico

4.8
#1 of 62 in Wildlife in Madeira
Green cliffs, red stone chasms, and sharp rocks protruding from the ocean foam make Ponta de Sao Lourenco a wonder that is virtually free from human influence. The area overlooks the north and south parts of the island, and on particularly clear days you can see Porto Santo in the distance. Follow a wooden boardwalk along the ridge over secluded beaches, ocean grottos, and volcanic cliffs. You'll cross valleys lined with palm trees and reach heights of 200 m (650 ft), where only the air separates you from the ocean surface. Bring plenty of water. • Really enjoyed the walk across to end of the headland. Rock formation is fascinating. Great views. Dolphins seen in the bay. Tip - the excellent path is rough in places and I would recommend wearing g...  more »
  • This tip of the island of Madeira is beautiful. On arrival there is a free car park. From there to the point Pargo has a walk with highs and lows, about 2,300 h for each side-round trip. We made almost 3/4 of the hike. The landscape over the Atlantic Ocean is divinal. The route is risky and medium difficulty. I loved everything-the route, the nature, the sights. Impossible to lose. I do not recommend walking with young children.

  • Well worth a visit. The landscape is barren but spectacular thanks to the coastline and sea. Great views. However you need to be comfortable with exposed pathways and big drops as you walk further down the peninsula. Fine for confident hikers who aren't afraid of big drops and exposed paths Otherwise just walk the first portion and leave the rest of the walk to the more adventurous
  • Rocky paths with beautiful views. It's in an open terrain so the sun is very strong here - because of that and also since there is a huge traffic, I recommended coming early in the morning or later in the afternoon (but count that you need cca 2,5 hours to walk there and back). Also the parking will be easier than. It's good to have a hat and there is also a rocky beach with beautifully clean water on the way so you can wear swimsuit as well (but flip flops would not be a good idea :)).
