Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Singapore

Pause from the hustle and bustle of the downtown and retreat to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, an intricate Hindu temple tucked away within the city. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, the goddess associated with empowerment. The temple's design differs greatly from those in more northeastern parts of the country, following a style more prevalent among South Indian Tamil temples. The temple was built by Indian pioneers and settlers who migrated to the area; it is one of the first testaments to their growing cultural base in Singapore. Colorful, intricate sculptures and figures adorn both the interior and exterior of the temple. Your best bet is to visit with a guide who can provide insight into the temple's history and significance. Be aware that visitors are expected to remove their shoes as a sign of respect. • It is a very holy place. It has many fascinating sculptures. The goddess here is considered very powerful. It also attracts many foreigners as they come here to learn about the Indian Culture.
  • If you are a south Indian, then visiting this temple in Little India gives a feeling of not missing your native. If you are from other country this is a great place to know about the traditional cultures of south India. It has long history, built by Tamils during the British colonial era and recently renovated with bright beautiful color. A great place to make a quick visit to India within Singapore. This. Place is very crowded on festival timings.

Message from Singapore Tourism Board

Situtated in the heart of Little India, the temple is a distinctive landmark with its colourful and intricate statues. Dedicated to goddess Sri Veeramakaliamman, the temple was once known as “Soonambu Kambam Kovil” or “temple at the lime village” in Tamil. At that time, most of its faithful worked at lime kilns in the vicinity. During World War II, many people hid here when Japanese air raids took place. Remarkably, the temple and all its statues were unaffected by the bombings. Its latest renovation, completed in 2014, included the addition of a six-storey building with staff quarters, a multipurpose hall and a wedding hall.
