#2 of 6 in Museums in Galle
Set in an old Dutch warehouse built in 1671, Maritime Archeology Museum features glass bottles, naval craft, and various antiquities recovered from at least 26 shipwrecks. A model of a 17th-century Dutch ship broken in half by the sea stands amid barrels, artillery guns, beer mugs, smoking pipes, and other accessories of seafaring. Situated within a historical fort, the museum recreates the experience of early modern trade in a harbor difficult to navigate. Watch the informative 15-minute video introduction, and ask the enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff any questions you might have. • I thought this place was really cool! Maybe not the greatest place ever but certainly interesting and worth an hour of your time. The movie at the beginning was a little slow for my taste but the rest of the museum was definitely cool.
  • The Maritime Museum in Galle is inside a old Dutch warehouse is showcases a collection of boat models, maps, artillery and things found from ship-wrecks, some almost a century old. Chinese ceramic retrieved from ships, and some interesting relics and depictions of real people. The place was restored back with aid from the Netherlands, and well maintained after it was severely affected by the boxing day tsunami in 2004.
