Trip Planner: Asia / Sri Lanka / Central Province / Kandy District / Kandy / Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue
You can't miss Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue, a huge concrete Buddha statue visible from most spots in Kandy. If you prefer to get close, climb the set of stairs up the hill to the statue's perch, where you can enjoy pleasant views of the city. Try to spot the lake, football stadium, and tea factory from your outlook. Some devotees may leave flowers or light oil lamps to worship at this attraction. Keep in mind you must remove your shoes to approach the statue, so take socks to prevent burning your feet on the concrete. Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue Reviews
We walked up to the statue from the city centre- it was a really tough uphill walk but well worth it when you see the views from the top. There was a small entrance fee and you couldn’t wear shoes, as... more »
Wer nicht in den zahlungspflichtigen Innenbereich der Buddhastatue will, braucht nicht unbedingt hinzugehen. Dort wo Aussicht wäre hat es zu viele Bäume. more »If you don't want to go inside the Buddha statue, you don't necessarily have to go. Where there would be views there are too many trees.
About a 10m walk up the hill, maybe slightly more if you are in full beam of the sun. Very calm and pleasant, no security standing outside restricting you from walking in if you are in long shorts. Shoe guy to left of the entrance, all shoes must be removed. There are tourist/Buddhist store, where you can purchase coconut carved animals (elephant/monkey) and some wood carvings for tourists, and books on enlightenment etc. Toilets on the grounds. Good view from the top of the statue. Entry fee was cheap, can’t remember how much it was though.
A very peaceful and beautiful place, ideal place for meditation. It is open ２４／７ you can go there any time. View of Kandy city from here is very beautiful, no matter what time It is. Don't forget to leave your shoes and dressup properly as it is a sacred place. There is a souvenir shop if you want to buy something.
