Glenloch Tea Factory, Katukitula

3.4
Farm · Tourist Spot
See how locals produce one of the most widely consumed drinks at Glenloch Tea Factory. The factory had humble beginnings, but over time it has put Sri Lanka on the map as the fourth-largest producer of tea in the world. One of its founders was Sir Thomas Lipton, a name widely recognized on tea boxes, who purchased a tea estate and factory in the late 19th century. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and temperate climate, which offers excellent conditions for growing quality tea leaves. Take a 15-20 minute guided tour to learn how a leaf becomes a beverage; afterwards you can purchase boxes of tea as a souvenir or gift. • Nice and free to visit. They show you how tea is dried and processed. They you can taste 4 kinds of tea. I would recommend to stop by. You exit through the shop where you can buy tea. Big box is 1000 ruppies
  • We stopped here on our way to Nuwara Eliya. The factory was fascinating but the tour wasn't. Felt like that the lady didn't want to do it but just had to do it anyway. She wrapped the entire tour in just 5 minutes. You can't learn everything in 5 minutes. I read a few things about tea in the factory. Was intrigued then started looking online and didn't buy anything because I wasn't educated about it really. But the tea samples were nice. The food was good too. Overall a good halt.
