#2 of 8 in Nature in Matale
Explore the 13 caves of Aluvihara Rock Cave Temple to find important relics of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist history. Tucked between hills, the temple was founded by third century BCE King Devanampiya Tissa after he introduced the religion to his people. The main building displays the original Pali Canon (sutras), which monks still copy using traditional methods on "ola" (palm) leaves and offer for purchase. Other caves exhibit relics, such as a reclining Buddha, paintings of the Himalayan mountains and the four great rivers, or depictions of sinners being punished in hell. You need a priest's permission to take photographs, but can store your shoes for free at the entrance. • Really nice temple. In the museum you can get a really nice souvenir. They will write your name on a palm leaf. But be careful about people around. Some man took as to a herbal garden after the temple visit and it was a big tourist trap.

Once you have climbed a large staircase there are fantastic views over the surrounding countryside. Caves have some amazing wall paintings - particularly graphic are the pictures of Hell. Now a UNESCO Heritage site these caves give a massive insight into life 2000 years ago. This is the place that buddhist theories wrote in papers first time in world
