Impress very different species from all over the world. We really liked the Canon ball tree, the Java fig tree and the bamboo trees have us. In the tree tops, countless flying foxes are to see, which also every now and then sail through the air. Of course many families of apes can be seen next to the fruit bats. We have enjoyed the hours in the Royal Botanic Gardens and are sure that families have their fun.

By far the most 'natural feel' and diverse botanical garden that I have seen. Very well maintained, my family and I were very impressed. Be prepared to walk a lot if you plan to see the whole gardens - bonus go around sunset towards to the river bank to see thousands of bats.

What a beautiful place, even though the weather wasn't great you could really appreciate the variety and amount of plants here. And things were labeled if you were interested in knowing the names. The orchid house was stunning. Unfortunately when we went the cactus house was closed but from what we could see it looked impressive. The huge bamboos were really amazing, can't really explain how big it was. Watch out for the local couples being romantic.... everywhere!

First built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala King and later expanded by the British, Royal Botanical Garden is 147 acres in extent and provides an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers of various shapes and sizes. Upon arrival, we collected the entrance ticket from the guide, make our way into the well maintained and large area, and leisurely walked around while simultaneously capturing some captivating shots for remembrance.Spending around at least 3 solid hours at this garden which actually was quite tiring, particularly figuring out which direction will lead back to the exit out.

These gardens are located 6.5 miles out of Kandy on the Kandy Colombo Road. The gardens house varieties of palms, ebony, bamboos, ficus, grasses, cactii, and orchids arranged in aesthetic avenues, clusters and enclosures. There is a giant Java Fig tree, a student garden, a medicine garden, a spice garden . Facilities like wash-rooms, restaurant and phones are found within the gardens. Royal Botanic Gardens open daily from 8.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. There is a suspension bridge over the river where I spotted a huge lizard sun tanning in the sun. It was interesting seeing the monkeys "climbing on tight rope" at the bridge, just like a circus performance.

Where to stay in Peradeniya
Since most people visit Peradeniya on a day trip from Kandy, the suburb itself offers a limited choice of accommodations. Most of the lodging options lie along the highway that passes by the town, connecting Kandy with Colombo, but you also can find several inns and guesthouses near the university, in the botanical garden area, and in the surrounding verdant hills. Most of the choices suit budget travelers, while offering all the basic amenities for a comfortable stay.
